Authority

Experience from inside the system

Most tax professionals learn the IRS from the outside. Matthew worked inside it in two distinct roles — and those roles do very different things.

Examination

Revenue Agent experience

  • How returns are examined and what documentation is expected
  • How reporting positions are evaluated and substantiated
  • How audit procedures progress from opening to closing
Collections

Revenue Officer experience

  • How balances, payment issues, and collection cases are worked
  • How liens and levies arise and what precedes them
  • What resolution procedures exist and how they are evaluated

Prior employment with the Internal Revenue Service does not provide special access, influence, preferential treatment, or any guaranteed outcome. What it provides is familiarity with how procedures actually run — and the ability to explain them.

Method

The Your Math Mate Method

Every engagement is worked the same way — like a problem shown step by step rather than an answer handed over.

  1. Step 1

    Understand the Facts

Establish what happened, what documents exist, and what deadline or decision matters.

  2. Step 2

    Explain the System

Translate tax or accounting rules into understandable language.

  3. Step 3

    Build the Response

Prepare the return, records, representation strategy, or financial process.

  4. Step 4

    Teach What Comes Next

Help you understand future responsibilities and avoid preventable surprises.

Credential architecture

What each credential changes about the conversation

Federal licensure

Enrolled Agent

An EA is licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and holds unlimited practice rights before the IRS. Practically, it means Matthew can represent you directly at every administrative level rather than referring you elsewhere mid-matter.

Business context

MBA

Tax questions are usually business questions in disguise. The conversation covers entity structure, cash flow, and timing — not just where a number lands on a form.

Examination

Former IRS Revenue Agent

Having conducted examinations, Matthew can tell you what an examiner is likely to request, what substantiation tends to satisfy them, and which positions invite questions.

Collections

Former IRS Revenue Officer

Collection cases follow procedures most taxpayers never see. Knowing those sequences changes which resolution paths are worth pursuing and in what order.

Preparation depth

Senior Tax Accountant

Years of preparing and reviewing complex individual and business returns means the return itself is handled with the same rigor as the representation work.

Decision framing

Former Financial Advisor

A tax outcome is the tail end of a financial decision. That background helps frame the decision before the tax consequence is locked in.

How the firm is built

Professional service for a select number of clients. Financial education for everyone.

Your Math Mate Inc is a sole practice. Every return, every notice, and every set of books is handled by Matthew directly — no hand-offs, no junior staff, no queue of files someone else is reviewing.

That model works because the client list stays deliberately small. It is a choice about depth of attention, not a sales tactic: there is no countdown, no artificial scarcity, and no pressure to decide today.

The other half of the commitment is public. Everything that can be explained without a client relationship is published openly in the learning library.

Answers first

Common questions

What is an Enrolled Agent?
An Enrolled Agent is a tax practitioner licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS at all administrative levels. EAs pass a three-part federal examination and complete continuing education each year.
Does former IRS employment give a tax professional special influence with the IRS?
No. Prior IRS employment provides no special access, influence, preferential treatment, or guaranteed outcome. Its value is familiarity with how examination and collection procedures actually operate.
What should I do first when I receive an IRS notice?
Identify the notice number, the tax period it covers, and the response date printed on the letter. Those three items determine whether the notice is informational or requires action, and how quickly a response is needed.
Is Your Math Mate Inc a CPA firm?
No. Your Math Mate Inc is a sole practice led by an Enrolled Agent. It is not a CPA firm and does not hold itself out as one.
Where is Your Math Mate Inc located?
The firm serves Springfield, Missouri and the surrounding Southwest Missouri and Ozarks region. Meetings are held by appointment; the PO Box in Springfield is a mailing address only, not a client-facing office.

The tax system is easier to face when someone can explain what it is doing — and why.
